Nancang is the largest ship in the PLA Navy’s inventory. However, originally a merchant tanker design, the ship has a maximum speed of only 16 knots, which has seriously limited its performance.

The PLA Navy purchased an unfinished tanker Vladimir Peregudov from Russia in 1996. After receiving outfitting at Dalian Shipyard, the ship joined the PLA Navy South Sea Fleet as Nancang (pennant number Nanyun 953). In 2004, the ship was renamed Qinghaihu (pennant number 885). It is the largest ship in service with the PLA Navy.

PROGRAMME

In 1993 the PLA Navy purchased the unfinished Komandarn Fedko class tanker Vladimir Peregudov from Russian Kherson Shipyard. Based on a merchant tanker design, the ship was originally laid down for the Soviet Navy as a replenishment ship but the building work was halted due to insufficient fund. Later the ship was sold to China and received outfitting at Dalian Shipyard.

Previously known as Nancang (NY953), the replenishment ship was renamed Qinghaihu after China’s largest inland lake. Its pennant number was also changed to 885.
先前即是“南昌”-Nancang（NY953），再补给船被重新以中国最大内陆湖“青海湖”（Qinghaihu）命名。它的编号也被改变为885号。

In 1996 the ship joined the PLA Navy South Sea Fleet as Nancang (Nanyun 953). In 2004, the ship was renamed Qinghaihu (pennant number changed to 885) under the PLAN’s new naming rules for its replenishment ships.

REPLENISHMENT SYSTEM

Qinghaihu/Nancang has a total of six cranes, four oil refuelling stations, and two stores stations. The ship is capable of replenishing three warships simultaneously. The ship carries 9,630 tonnes fuel and other supplies. The cranes on the front are also capable of anchoring zone supplies.

Qinghaihu/Cancang is fitted with a helicopter hanger and flight deck, which enable it to re-supply warships in a task group by vertical replenishment (VERTREP).

HELICOPTER

Qinghaihu/Nancang is fitted with a flight deck and a hanger which can accommodate one Z-8 helicopter. This gives the ship an enhanced capability to re-supply warships in a task group by vertical replenishment (VERTREP). which involves using helicopters to ferry supplies from ship to ship. VERTREP may be used to speed up the process of replenishing a ship on one of the RAS rigs, or to re-store another vessel that does not need to take fuel onboard.
