Qiandaohu class is the most advanced multi-product fleet replenishment ship in service with the PLA Navy. The first of the class Qiandaohu (886) entered service with the PLAN East Sea Fleet in April 2005.“千岛湖”（Qiandaohu）级是PLA海军服役中最先进的多品种舰队再补给船。该级的等一艘“千岛湖”号（Qiandaohu），舷号886，在2005年4月按计划进入东海舰队服役。

Two new multi-product replenishment ships, the Qiandaohu class (NATO codename: Fuchi class ), have been built for the PLA Navy (PLAN) in 2003/04. The first, Qiandaohu (pennant number 886), was built at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard in Shanghai and launched in July 2003. The ship entered service with the PLAN East Sea Fleet on 30 April 2005. The second, Weishanhu (pennant number 887), was built by Huangpu Shipyard in Guangzhou.

PROGRAMME

The PLA Navy has been operating three large fleet replenishment ships since the early 1980s, but only one of them is real multi-product replenishment ship capable of re-supplying warships at sea with fuel, stores, weapon equipment and munitions, with the rest two being fleet tankers. The PLAN is known to have been pursuing the capability to operate in deep, and the lack of high-speed, large-size, multi-product replenishment ships has been limited its ability of doing so.

In late 2003 Internet photos confirmed that a new large replenishment ship with pennant number 886 was had been launched at Shanghai-based Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard. The ship was said to have been launched in July 2003. By the end of 2004 the ship had completed its system installation and sea trial. In June 2005, Chinese media confirmed that the ship, which was named Qiandaohu, had been commissioned in the PLAN East Sea Fleet on 30 April 2005. At the same time, a second ship (pennant number 887) was under construction at Guangzhou-based Huangpu Shipyard. The ship was reportedly named Weishanhu and may enter service with the PLAN in late 2005.

The commission of the Qiandaohu class is a part of China’s ambitious plan to build a “blue water” navy that can reach waters far away from its coastline. The replenishment ships are capable of supporting general purpose task groups, amphibious task groups, or even aircraft carrier battle groups.

“千岛湖”（Qiandaohu）级是中国雄心勃勃建立“蓝海”海军计划的一个部分，有能力远离它的海岸线到达远海。再补给船能够支持一般用途特遣部队，两栖特遣部队或甚至航空母舰战斗群。

WEAPONS

The ship is armed four Type 76A dual-37 mm anti-aircraft guns that fire shells at a rate of 400 rounds/min to a range of 9.4km for airborne targets.

HELICOPTERS

The ship is capable of supporting a Z-8 size medium helicopter. A large flight deck and a helicopter hanger are located at the stern of the ship. This facility gives the ship an enhanced capability to re-supply warships in a task group by vertical replenishment (VERTREP). which involves using helicopters to ferry supplies from ship to ship. VERTREP may be used to speed up the process of replenishing a ship on one of the RAS rigs, or to re-store another vessel that does not need to take fuel onboard.
