Officials from China's defence industry are claiming that their latest airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) system, the Kong Jing (KJ)-500, is an "indigenous" Chinese product.

Statements to that effect by Xiong Qunli, chairman of one of the country's largest and fastest-growing defence consortiums, the China Electronics Technology Corporation (CETC) Group, were carried by China's state-run Xinhua news agency on 14 March.

The KJ-500 system is carried by a Shaanxi Y-9 four-engine turboprop aircraft and is based around a non-rotating radome mounted on the aircraft's upper fuselage. The radar itself is composed of several active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar sets that are mounted in a triangular displacement, the combination of which provides 360° coverage.

The radar, which was developed by CETC, is a smaller and lighter variant of the system mounted in the KJ-2000 AEW&C aircraft. Despite being a turboprop instead of turbofan-powered platform like the KJ-2000's Russian-built Ilyushin Il-76, the KJ-500 only has a five-hour mission endurance capability, which might indicate that fuel tanks have been displaced to provide room internally for the onboard radar controllers, workstations, and other aircrew.

The No 38 Research Institute's Chinese and English-language websites both describe the KJ-2000 radar set as "the largest airborne radar system in China" and give it the designator 'K/LLQF01'. The design of this system was reportedly based on co-operation that Chinese industry had from the 1990s onward with Russia's Vega radar design bureau, which designed the Shmel-M system mounted on an Il-76 for the Russian Aerospace Forces' A-50 Mainstay AEW&C platform.

The internal arrangement of the aircraft was shown at the 2014 Airshow China exposition in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province, in the form of a cutaway model in one of the exhibition halls. According to this model, the KJ-500's radar set and onboard workstations are supplied by CETC No 38 Research Institute in Hefei, Anhui Province.
